Our City Our Climate Report Launched
The Our City Our Climate Report was launched in Waitati on November 21st by Dunedin Mayor and LGNZ Chair, Dave Cull. Special guests who joined the launch were Neville Peat, award winning author and author of "The Invading Sea", Dr Simon Cox, Principal Scientist at GNS Science and Dr Lyn Carter, Kai Tahu and author of 'Indigenous Pacific Approaches to Climate Change'. The report, by BRCT and supported by the Deep South Science Challenge, presents the outcome of a series of community workshops on climate change and adaptation. Workshops revealed a strong desire by community members to be part of the planning of responses and to have their views and values heard. It was clear also that none of the groups concerned: communities, iwi, local government, NGOs or business, can handle adaptation alone. The workshops mark a starting point for ongoing conversations that need to be held about how adapting to climate change can occur in a collaborative way that preserves our communities and their unique characters. BRCT is continuing to follow strands that emerged from the Our City Our Climate workshops, including through our work on the Climate Safe House project and following up calls for finding ways to improve emergency preparedness in Blueskin Bay.
